“Many of us, especially the perfectionists among us, spend large chunks of our lives ruminating about the past and worrying about the future. Lurking in the backgrounds of most of those self-generating thoughts that keep us from falling to sleep at night are deeply engrained irrational beliefs about ourselves. The first step in addressing rumination and worry is to identify those ‘believed thoughts.’ Two sources of clues to those irrational thoughts are Tara Bennett-Goleman’s (2001) believed thoughts and Albert Ellis’ (2001) irrational beliefs.”
